Signs Your Outlet Needs Repair or Replacement
Call an electrician if you notice any of these:
- Warm or hot outlets or cover plates. This is usually a loose connection or an overloaded circuit. Read why an outlet feels warm.
- Sparks, burn marks, or a burning smell. Stop using the outlet and turn off its breaker.
- Plugs that fall out or fit loosely. Worn contacts can arc and overheat.
- Outlets that work on and off, or have stopped working entirely.
- Breakers that trip when you plug something in. See our circuit breaker service.
- No GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, or outdoors.
- Two-prong (ungrounded) outlets in an older home.
Outlet Stopped Working? Check This First
- A tripped GFCI outlet. One GFCI often protects several outlets downstream, sometimes in another room. Press “Reset” on nearby GFCI outlets. If it keeps tripping, read why a GFCI outlet keeps tripping.
- A tripped breaker. Check your panel for a breaker in the middle or “off” position.
- A wall switch. Some outlets are controlled by a switch.
If none of those fix it, the problem is likely a loose or burned connection or a failed device, and that needs an electrician.
Our Outlet Services
New Outlet Installation
We add outlets where you need them for renovations, home offices, kitchens, garages, and new appliances. Options include standard, USB, GFCI, AFCI, and weather-resistant outdoor outlets. Planning a home office? See how many outlets a home office should have.
240-Volt Dryer & Appliance Outlets
Electric dryers, ranges, EV chargers, and some shop equipment need dedicated 240-volt circuits and outlets. We install them to code and check that your electrical panel has the capacity.
Outlet Replacement & Upgrades
We replace worn, damaged, or outdated outlets. Where code requires it, we also upgrade two-prong outlets to grounded or GFCI-protected ones.
Outlet Repair
When an outlet is dead, warm, or loose, we find out why. Usually it’s a loose connection, a failed device, or a wiring fault upstream, and we fix the cause, not just the faceplate. Bigger wiring problems go to our electrical repair and whole-home rewiring teams.
Why Outlet Safety Matters
Faulty outlets are a common source of shocks, electrical fires, and damaged electronics. Regular checks catch loose wiring, overloaded circuits, missing ground-fault protection, and moisture damage before they become hazards. They also keep your home up to code when you sell or renovate. If your home is older, an electrical inspection covers every outlet at once.
