GFCI vs. AFCI: What’s the Difference?
GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) protects people from electric shock. It shuts off power in a fraction of a second when current leaks to ground, for example through water or a person. That’s why it’s required near water and outdoors.
AFCI (arc-fault circuit interrupter) protects your home from electrical fires. It detects dangerous arcing from damaged cords, loose connections, or nails through wires, and cuts power before the arc can ignite.
Dual-function (GFCI/AFCI) breakers do both in one device. They’re often the simplest way to meet code on circuits that need both.

Where is GFCI and AFCI Protection Required?
Virginia’s building code currently references the 2020 National Electrical Code. In homes, that generally means:
GFCI protection for receptacles in:
- Kitchens (countertop receptacles and those near sinks)
- Bathrooms
- Garages and accessory buildings
- Outdoors, including outdoor outlets for equipment like AC units
- Laundry areas
- Basements, finished or unfinished
- Crawl spaces, and near pools, hot tubs, and sinks
AFCI protection for circuits serving most living areas, such as bedrooms, living and family rooms, dining rooms, dens, hallways, closets, and laundry areas.
Older homes aren’t automatically required to update. But new circuits, renovations, and some replacements trigger current requirements, and home inspectors routinely flag missing GFCIs. We’ll tell you exactly what applies to your project.
Signs You Need GFCI or AFCI Work
- No GFCI outlets in your kitchen, bathrooms, garage, or outside
- A home inspection report calling for GFCI/AFCI protection
- Two-prong outlets you’d like to make safer
- A GFCI that keeps tripping or won’t reset (see why a GFCI outlet keeps tripping)
- An AFCI breaker that trips repeatedly, which can point to a wiring problem
- A kitchen, bath, or basement remodel that adds or changes circuits
Our GFCI & AFCI Services
GFCI Outlet & Breaker Installation
We install GFCI receptacles or GFCI breakers, whichever protects the circuit best, in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, laundry rooms, and outdoors. See our outlet services.
AFCI & Dual-Function Breakers
We install AFCI and dual-function breakers in your electrical panel and confirm they’re compatible with your panel brand.
Nuisance-Tripping Diagnosis
Frequent GFCI or AFCI trips usually mean a real fault: moisture, a damaged cord, a shared neutral, or a failing appliance. We find the cause instead of swapping breakers. See our circuit breaker service.
Inspection & Code Updates
Selling, buying, or renovating? An electrical inspection identifies every circuit that needs protection, with a priced plan.
