Sandston has one of the most unusual origin stories in the Richmond area. In 1918, the federal government built 230 prefabricated bungalows here to house workers at DuPont’s Seven Pines munitions plant. The community was later sold to the Richmond-Fairfield Railway and renamed Sandston in 1923. Much of the original neighborhood is now the Sandston Historic District, with homes built mainly between 1918 and the 1960s.
